Red Dwarf Shows — and more —In Your Ears Red Dwarf has been an 8 season TV series as well as a pair of radio series, as well as four books. And probably a movie before the end of 2003. Or 2004, or something like that. This page is dedicated to the companion books and their readings by various individuals. The books, Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers, Better Than Life, Last Human and Backwards all were written by the creators of Red Dwarf. The first two as collaborations, the last two as separate projects. They have been recorded as both abridged 2-tape sets as well as unabridged multi-tape sets. The first two follow, roughly, the first two series of Red Dwarf. But the stories and characters are fleshed out in such a way that you get much more than on TV. Chris Barrie reads the first two books utilizing his amazing talents as an impressionist to capture all of the main characters' voices.
Craig Charles takes over for the reading of Last Human. This is a good match since the main action revolves around Dave Lister. Craig, like Chris, is a master at impersonating his costars.
Rob Grant reads his own work, Backwards. His impersonations are more like hints at the character's voice rather than an out-and-out impression. This is a very interesting concept, where everything is running backwards, yet the Dwarf crew are living the backwards timestream in forwards. Complicated, but well written.
